Welcome to American Legion Post 413 in Grand Blanc, Michigan. It was in 1947 that Post 413 of the American Legion was chartered with Mr. Ralz Taylor being selected as the first Commander. Under Commander Taylor, they chose a small building on Grand Blanc Rd to be the first Home of Post 413. As membership and activities grew, the decision was made to move to a much larger location on South Saginaw St in 1972. The "old house" was our location until 1999 when membership had slowed down and the building was in major disrepair. The Home Association decided to take it to the membership to possibly sell the location because the property was worth more than the building needed in repairs. It was approved to sell. We then bought and moved back into our original location on Grand Blanc Rd. The building was completely renovated at that point with a couple small additions to enhance the quality.
Post 413 is a family place. The members take as their mission the betterment of youth and children, and it is in this spirit that American Legion Post 413 works to send a deserving boy to "Boys State" while the Auxiliary works to send a girl to "Girls State" each year. Additionally, Post 413 hosts fundraisers and other events to raise money to donate to improve local athletic fields and sponsor boys and girls athletic teams. We have also donated time and money to our local government, American Legion State of Michigan events, veteran organizations and other civic events as well.
Over the past 60 plus years, Post 413 has claimed among its members a host of community leaders including 5 past Mayors of Grand Blanc including Gregory Crane, Paul Galuszka, Dick Porter, Jack Carey and Larry Tomblinson. We also have had many local and state councilpeople, a county commissioner and many business and professional people as well.
We are honored to have the recently deceased Rev. Bob Davidson as our long-time Post and Past National Chaplain. Also, Jack Carey not only served for his Post but as State and National Commander as well.
American Legion Post 413 has come a long way through its years. In January 1950, our Auxiliary was chartered. The Auxiliary has been a constant back-bone at our facility. For many years, they have hosted bingo and other social events to raise money for the Post and Girls State. They are also extremely involved in the Poppy program and do a wonderful job raising money through their efforts.
To follow that up, the Sons of the American Legion chartered their organization in June of 1998. The SAL had only 25 members when they started in 1998 but it has grown to nearly 200 members in 2008. The Sons have really stepped up over the past 5 years within the Post. Along with the younger members of the Auxiliary, they have hosted multiple social events for the membership and guests. The SAL has jointly donated to many Legion related sponsorships including the Flint/CANUSA games and a major donation to the Grand Blanc Police for a new AED.
